A yacht charter from Panama City is a captained boat you hire by the hour or the day, almost always from Flamenco Marina or La Playita on the Amador causeway. Trips run from sunset cruises and Taboga days to Las Perlas and fishing. Price follows boat size, hours and fuel. A legal operator has ATP registration, an AMP-inspected boat, a licensed captain and insurance.
What you can charter from Panama City
Five products cover nearly every booking. Durations are typical, not fixed; each operator sets its own.
| Trip | Typical length | What the day is |
|---|---|---|
| Bay or sunset cruise | 2 to 4 hours | The skyline from the water, the causeway, ships waiting at anchor to transit and the Bridge of the Americas from seaward. |
| Taboga | 4 to 8 hours | About 8 nm to the island, swimming off the boat, lunch at anchor or in the village. See Taboga from Panama City. |
| Las Perlas day | 8 to 10 hours | About 35 nm each way to Contadora and its neighbours. Fast boats only. |
| Las Perlas overnight | 24 to 36 hours | Anchor off Contadora or Mogo Mogo, back after breakfast. See Las Perlas from Panama City. |
| Fishing | 6 to 10 hours | Inshore around the bay and Taboga, or offshore toward Las Perlas, on a licensed sport-fishing boat. |
Canal-view cruises run along the approach channel and past the anchorage. A partial transit through the Miraflores locks is a different product: only ACP-approved tour operators can sell it, and a private yacht charter cannot. From July to October, many bay and Las Perlas trips double as whale watching, under MiAmbiente's distance rules.
What drives the price
We do not list prices, because they change with the boat and the season. These are the levers that move a quote:
- Boat size and type. A centre-console, a 40 ft express cruiser, a sailing catamaran and a 70 ft motor yacht are different products at different rates.
- Hours. Most operators sell blocks (four hours, eight hours, overnight). A sunset cruise is the shortest and cheapest way aboard.
- Fuel and distance. Las Perlas is a 70 nm round trip. On a large motor yacht, fuel is the biggest line in the quote, and an all-in price will reflect it.
- Crew. A captain alone, or captain plus mate, stewardess or chef.
- Day and season. Dry-season weekends and holidays fill first.
- What is included. Ice, water, drinks, food, snorkel gear, tender, ITBMS (7 per cent), and the crew gratuity are each sometimes extra.
Compare quotes on the same basis: same hours, same route, same inclusions. A cheap Las Perlas price on a slow boat usually means most of the day at sea. Operators can find the arithmetic behind a fair quote in charter costs and pricing.
Where charter boats leave from
Almost all charters board on the Calzada de Amador, the causeway that runs from the city out to Isla Flamenco.
- Flamenco Marina at the far end of the causeway, with a fuel dock and the Fuerte Amador shopping centre. Calls on VHF 10.
- La Playita de Amador on the south side, closer to town, base for many fishing and day boats. VHF 9.
A few boats use the Club de Yates y Pesca on Avenida Balboa (a members' club) or private docks such as Ocean Reef. Your confirmation should name the marina and the pier, because the causeway is long. Arrive 20 minutes early with ID; you will be asked for your name for the passenger list. Operators: see pickup locations in Panama City for the agreements behind each dock.
How to book safely: the licensed-operator checklist
Panama regulates paying boat trips through several agencies. A legitimate operator can show you each of these:
- ATP registration. Marine tourist transport businesses register with the Autoridad de Turismo de Panamá (Registro Nacional de Turismo) under Executive Decree 82 of 2008, which sets minimum requirements such as safety equipment, insurance and an aviso de operación.
- AMP registration and inspection. The boat is registered with the Autoridad Marítima de Panamá for commercial passenger service and carries an inspection certificate with its passenger capacity printed on it. Count the guests against that number.
- A licensed captain holding an AMP maritime licence for the class of boat.
- Insurance. Civil liability cover for passengers. Ask who the insurer is.
- Safety gear you can see. A life jacket for every guest, including children's sizes, a working VHF, extinguishers and a first-aid kit.
A foreign-flagged yacht offered for charter needs more: Executive Decree 4 of 2025 lets the AMP grant a special charter navigation permit only when the yacht is placed with a locally licensed charter company under a temporary charter contract. A foreign yacht taking cash from guests with none of that is not a legal charter. Red flags: no named boat or captain in writing, full payment in cash with no receipt, and more guests than the certificate allows. More on this in illegal charters and enforcement.

Seasons and weather
Panama has no hurricanes, so there is no closed season. The dry season (about December to April) is sunny and breezy, with clearer water in the islands and a northerly chop that makes the run home wet in the afternoon. The rainy season (about May to November) brings flat mornings and afternoon squalls with lightning. Good operators leave early and are home or at anchor before the clouds build. Read the weather clause before you pay, and see cancellation and weather policies for what a fair one says.
Your practical starting checklist
- Choose the trip first (bay, Taboga, Las Perlas, fishing), then the boat that suits its distance.
- Ask for an all-in quote and a written list of what is extra: fuel, food, drinks, ITBMS, gratuity.
- Ask for the ATP registration, the AMP certificate with passenger capacity, the captain's licence and the insurer.
- Get the boat name, captain, marina and pier in writing.
- Read the weather and cancellation clause before paying a deposit, and pay against a receipt.
- Arrive 20 minutes early with ID for the passenger list.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a yacht charter in Panama City cost?
It depends on boat size, hours, crew and fuel. A short bay or sunset cruise is the cheapest option; a Las Perlas day on a large motor yacht is the most expensive because of fuel. Compare quotes for the same hours and inclusions.
Where do yacht charters leave from in Panama City?
Mostly from Flamenco Marina at the end of the Amador causeway and from La Playita de Amador. A few use the Club de Yates y Pesca on Avenida Balboa or private docks.
How do I know a Panama charter is legal?
Ask for the ATP tourism registration, the AMP registration and inspection certificate with the boat's passenger capacity, the captain's AMP licence and the insurance policy. A legal operator will show all four.
Can a yacht charter take me through the Panama Canal?
Not on a private charter. Partial transits through the locks are sold by ACP-approved tour operators on licensed passenger vessels. A charter can cruise the approach channel area and the ship anchorage.
