Captain work in Panama spreads well beyond the capital: deliveries and canal transits on the Caribbean side, crewed catamarans in San Blas, water taxis and tours in Bocas del Toro, fishing lodges in Chiriquí and boats out of Pedasí. Every job needs the AMP licence for that boat and service, and foreigners also need a MITRADEL work permit.
Where captain work is, region by region
| Region | Main captain work | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Panama City and the Pearl Islands | Day charters, private yachts, Las Perlas trips | Flamenco, La Playita, Club de Yates y Pesca |
| Colón and Portobelo coast | Deliveries, canal transits, moving boats to and from yards | Shelter Bay, Linton Bay, Panamarina |
| San Blas (Guna Yala) | Crewed sailing and catamaran charters, the Cartagena crossing | Operators working with Guna communities |
| Bocas del Toro | Water taxis, reef and dolphin tours, caretaking boats left in marinas | Bocas Marina, Red Frog, Marina Carenero, Bocas Town docks |
| Chiriquí and Coiba | Sportfishing lodges, island trips | Boca Chica and Pedregal |
| Azuero | Sportfishing and Isla Iguana trips from beaches | Pedasí and Playa El Arenal |
Panama City has its own guide: captain jobs in Panama City. The regional guides are Bocas del Toro, San Blas, Chiriquí and Coiba and Azuero.
Which licence each kind of job needs
The grade follows the boat and the service, not the job title:
- Water taxi or panga under 12 m: operador de lanchas de 2da. clase.
- Passenger launch of 12 to 20 m: operador de lanchas de 1ra. clase.
- Private yacht of 8 to 20 m: patrón de nave de placer de 2da. clase; over 20 m, 1ra. clase.
- Larger yachts: capitán de yate for the tonnage (200 TAB, 500 TAB or unlimited).
- Panama-flagged ships: STCW titles.
Tour and charter boats also need ATP registration and an AMP-inspected boat; fishing charters need ARAP licences on top. Which grade the AMP wants for a commercial pleasure boat over 12 m is not always clear, so ask Gente de Mar in writing. Grades are in licence types and limits; the operator side is in captain requirements for paid trips.
Deliveries, transits and the Caribbean side
Boats arrive at Shelter Bay and the Portobelo coast to transit the canal, to be laid up or sold, or to start a Pacific crossing. That brings delivery work: Caribbean to Pacific through the canal, on to Costa Rica, Ecuador or the Galápagos, or back north. Owners and insurers look for offshore experience and a licence that fits the boat and route; on a foreign-flag yacht the flag state and the insurer set that, on a Panama-flagged one the AMP does. See hiring a delivery captain. Canal line-handling is crew work, not captaincy, but it is how many people meet owners; see working as a canal line handler.
San Blas, Bocas and the fishing coasts
San Blas. Charters run inside Guna Yala, where the Congreso General Guna and each community set rules on top of the national paperwork. Captains work for operators that have those relationships; see San Blas charter operations.
Bocas del Toro. Water taxis are local transport between the islands, and tours to beaches, reefs and dolphin areas are the main tourism business. Boats carrying paying passengers need ATP registration, an AMP-inspected boat and a licensed operator. Owners who fly home leave boats in the marinas, which creates caretaker and maintenance work.
Chiriquí and Azuero. Fishing lodges around Boca Chica and boats out of Pedasí hire captains who can find fish and handle the swell past Punta Mala. Billfish are catch-and-release under the June 2026 decrees; see running a fishing charter.
Foreign captains: the permit comes before the job
An AMP licence lets you drive the boat; it does not let you be employed. MITRADEL's work-permit rules cap ordinary foreign staff at 10% of an employer's workforce and specialists at 15%, and each foreign employee needs a permit. Many small regional operators have only a few Panamanian staff, so the cap leaves little room. Foreign captains often work through a residency category with its own permit, their own company, or on foreign-flag yachts. Get advice from an immigration lawyer first; see foreign crew work permits and using a foreign licence.
Pay and how to approach operators
There is no published pay survey for captains in Panama, so this guide gives no figures. Day-boat and water-taxi work is usually paid per trip or per day, and lodge work by the season. Private yacht captains employed in Panama are owed the décimo tercer mes and Caja de Seguro Social cover like any employee. Ask each operator what a trip pays and how many trips a captain ran last season.
Outside the capital, hiring is even more personal. Turn up at the marina or the landing, ask the dockmaster or lodge manager who is hiring, carry copies of your AMP licence, courses and medical, and speak Spanish. The licence path is in how to become a boat captain in Panama.
Your practical starting checklist
- Choose the region and the kind of boat you want to work on.
- Match the boat and service to the AMP grade and get that licence first.
- If you are a foreigner, confirm your work-permit route with an immigration lawyer.
- Visit the marinas, landings or lodges in person with copies of your papers.
- Ask operators what each trip pays and how the season runs before you commit.
