Shipping a boat to Panama: yacht transport or container

You can ship a boat to Panama on a yacht transport ship or, if it is small, in a container or on a flat rack. In November 2026 none of the yacht transport lines we checked listed a Panamanian port. DYT's nearest stop is Golfito, Costa Rica. Container and flat-rack cargo goes to Panama's commercial ports at Balboa and Colón.

The four ways to ship a boat

MethodHow it worksSuits
Lift-on/lift-offA crane lifts the boat onto a cradle on a cargo ship's deckSail and motor yachts of roughly 8 to 40 m
Float-on/float-offThe ship partly submerges and the yacht floats over its deckMainly superyachts, typically 30 m and over
ContainerThe boat is craned into a 20 ft or 40 ft container, or an open-top oneBoats up to about 12 m, masts down
Flat rackThe boat sits on an open platform on a container shipWide boats and small catamarans; exposed to weather

The size bands come from Peters & May's own guide; other lines use similar ones. Your boat's length, beam, height and weight decide which methods are open to you.

Which yacht transport lines serve Panama

We checked the published information of three of the best-known yacht transport companies in November 2026:

  • DYT Yacht Transport lists no Panamanian port. Its schedule includes Port Everglades, Florida, to Golfito, Costa Rica, and Golfito onward to the South Pacific and the Mediterranean. Golfito is on the Pacific side, close to the Panama border.
  • Sevenstar Yacht Transport appears on DYT's site as a partner for destinations not on DYT's own schedule. Noonsite's 2020 schedule summary shows Sevenstar also using Golfito on the Pacific side.
  • Peters & May lists a combined Caribbean and USA region on its destinations page, with no Panamanian port named.

Routes change every season, so ask each company directly about Panama. If a yacht ship drops your boat in Golfito, you clear it into Costa Rica, then sail or deliver it the rest of the way and clear into Panama at a Pacific port of entry. Panama's ports are listed in ports of entry by sea.

Panamanian ports for container and flat-rack cargo

A boat in a container or on a flat rack travels on ordinary container services, booked through a freight forwarder. Panama's big container terminals sit at both ends of the Canal:

  • Balboa, on the Pacific side next to Panama City. It is near the city's marinas and yards; see Panama City marinas and boat storage.
  • Colón, on the Caribbean side, including the Manzanillo area terminals. Shelter Bay Marina, with its yard, is across the bay; see Shelter Bay Marina.

A cargo port is not a marina. Your boat comes off the ship in a container yard, clears customs there, and then has to be trucked to a yard or crane that can launch it. Before booking, agree with a marina or yard who collects the boat, how it is moved and who launches it.

Customs when the boat arrives as cargo

A boat that arrives on a ship has no zarpe and no crew list. It is cargo with a bill of lading, so Aduanas deals with it as an arriving shipment, and the port will not release it without a customs declaration filed by a licensed broker. Decide beforehand which status you want:

  • Definitive import: duty and any ITBMS on the CIF value. Shipping invoices make up the freight part of that value. See importing a boat into Panama.
  • Temporary stay as a visiting yacht: ask your broker whether and how a boat arriving as cargo can be admitted in transit. We could not confirm the procedure. See in transit vs imported.

Once it is launched, a foreign-flagged boat still needs the AMP cruising permit to cruise. See foreign-flagged boats in Panama.

Preparing and insuring the boat

Transport companies give you a preparation list. Typical items from Peters & May's guide:

  • unstep the mast if the method needs it, and remove sails, covers and running rigging;
  • reduce fuel to a safe minimum, drain fresh water and isolate the batteries;
  • take off or lash down deck gear, electronics, aerials and solar panels;
  • remove valuables and food, and photograph the boat and its equipment.

Your annual hull policy usually does not cover the boat as cargo. Peters & May says its marine cargo cover generally runs at 0.25% to 0.3% of the insured value, which is the yacht's value plus freight. Ask for the exact terms, and check your own policy's navigation limits for the legs after launch; see boat insurance in Panama.

Timing and cost

Peters & May's guide gives these planning times:

  • two to five working days for a quotation;
  • one to four weeks of preparation;
  • one day each to load and discharge;
  • one to five working days for customs at the destination;
  • three to six months' lead time for complex or oversized yachts.

We do not publish freight prices: they depend on the boat's dimensions, the route and the season. Get quotes from more than one line and a forwarder. Compare them against sailing to Panama or hiring a delivery captain. Buying in Florida first? See buying in Florida and bringing it to Panama. If you later sell abroad, exporting a boat from Panama covers the outbound side.

Your practical starting checklist

  1. Measure length, beam, height and weight, and pick the possible methods.
  2. Ask yacht transport lines and a freight forwarder for routes and quotes.
  3. Engage a Panamanian customs broker and decide import or transit status.
  4. Book the collection, trucking and launch with a Panamanian yard or marina.
  5. Arrange marine cargo insurance and prepare the boat to the carrier's list.
  6. Clear customs on arrival, launch, and get the cruising permit if foreign-flagged.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a yacht transport ship to Panama?

None of the main lines we checked in November 2026 listed a Panamanian port. DYT runs Port Everglades to Golfito, Costa Rica, near the border; ask each line about Panama directly.

Can I ship a small boat to Panama in a container?

Yes, boats up to about 12 m can travel in a container, or on a flat rack if wider, on regular container services to Balboa or Colón. A freight forwarder books it.

Do I pay import duty if I ship my boat to Panama?

If you import it definitively, yes: duty, and any ITBMS that applies, is charged on the CIF value, which includes the freight. Ask your broker whether a shipped boat can enter as a visitor instead.

How long does it take to ship a yacht?

Peters & May's guide puts preparation at one to four weeks and customs at the destination at one to five working days, plus the sea passage. Complex yachts need three to six months' lead time.
